School of Accounting


1.    The competition will be open to all NMMU School of Accounting students, degree or diploma, who is studying in the field of accounting (e.g. B Com General Accounting, BCom Chartered Accounting, Diploma in Accountancy, Higher Certificate in Accounting, etc.). Entry to the competition is free of charge.

2.    The lyrics of the song must be original and can be from the financial accounting, auditing, taxation or management accounting and finance “subject fields”.  The lyrics can be written to accompany the music of well-known songs.

  • The song must feature “accounting-related” language (e.g. debit/credit, budget, cash flows, variable costs, etc.)
  • Any music genre (e.g. rap, jazz, pop, etc.) can be used, as long as there are lyrics.

3.    Contestants can bring any musical instruments such as guitars, drums and accordions, etc. 

4.    Each performance is limited to 5 minutes; contestants who exceed the time limit will be penalised.

5.    Entry forms can be collected from the School of Accounting representative on each campus; proof of registration in one of the Accounting programmes will have to be submitted on registration.  Closing date for registration is Monday 30 May 2016 at 12:00. No more entrants will be allowed and no correspondence will be entered into after this date. Entries must be submitted to the marketing & engagement team on or before 30 May 2016 on the South Campus, Main Building, Floor 08, room 0801 or to your relelvant campus representatives. 

6.    Entrants will have to “book” their audition with the School of Accounting representative on each campus, before Wednesday 13 July 2016 at 12:00.

7.    Auditions proceedings:

  • Auditions will be held on Friday 15 July 2016 from 10:00 – 16:00. Auditions will take place on all campuses. 
  • The judging panel will consist of academics/support staff from the School of Accounting.
  • The judging panel will be tasked with the tough decision of selecting 10 best performances to go through to the finale on Saturday 30 July 2016 at 18:00 in the South Campus Auditorium.
  • Finalists will be announced via email on 18 July 2016.
  • Finalists for each round will be judged based on a live performance – no prior video recording. 

8.    Finale:

  • The judging panel for the finale will consist of one representative of the School of Accounting, a representative from the event sponsor ACCA, and other relevant judges.
  • Finalists will be judged based on a live performance in the Auditorium on South Campus; this finale will be open to all students from the NMMU.
  • Limited space available for the finale. First come, first served. 
  • Tickets will be sold at R10 (general seating) and R50 (golden seating) per ticket for students, payable at the cashiers using the account number EA09 4275. Available from 30 May 2016.
  • Tickets must hereafter be collected from the School of Accounting representative on each campus – proof of receipt must be presented.
  • The finale will be video recorded.
  • Microphones will be provided at the finale. 

9.    Prizes for the competition worth over R15 000:

For the live performance:

1.    1st prize:  R5 000 cash

2.    2nd prize: R2 500 cash

3.    3rd prize:  R1 500 cash

For original lyrics:

1.    1st prize:  R2 000 cash

2.    2nd prize:  R1 000 cash

3.    3rd prize:  R500 cash

Best entry from each campus:

1.    R300 cash (South)

2.    R300 cash (2nd Ave)

3.    R300 cash (Missionvale)

4.    R300 cash (George)
  • Lucky draw:  10 Greenacres Gift vouchers to the value of R200 each (audience at finale).

10.  General:

  • Contestants are required to maintain the highest ethical standards and practices as School of Accounting student representatives.
