School of Accounting

NMMU is a comprehensive university thus The School of Accounting offers various under- and postgraduate accounting degree and diploma programmes which aim to prepare candidates for careers in business and accounting generally or as professional accountants and auditors, financial managers or financial/tax consultants.

The School has approximately 1734 students enrolled in undergraduate degrees with Accounting as their major, and about 140 students enrolled for the B Com Honours (Accounting) degree.

The School of Accounting also boasts with 31 Vice-Chancellor Scholarship students that enrolled for the BCom Chartered Accounting or the BCom Accounting Sciences programmes out of NMMU's 80 Vice-Chancellor Scholarship students.

A Holistic Development Project for Top Academic Achievers in the NMMU School of Accounting (short hand reference: TPP = The Top Performers’ Project) was re-launched on 7 April 2015 as the PinnAcle Leadership Programme. Key focus areas of this programme are academic enhancement; professional development; personal/leadership development; as well as developing a sense of social responsibility and global citizenship. The “vehicles” of these developmental dimensions varied from personal and group mentoring (academic), engagement with the profession (professional) to active participation in leadership events and social “outreach” projects.

  • Qualification as a Chartered Accountant (SA)
    The majority of our degree students register for programmes enabling them to qualify as Chartered Accountants (SA). Upon their successful completion of these programmes, our graduates have done extremely well in the professional qualifying examination set by the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants, their results being well in excess of the national averages:
