NMMU offers various bursary opportunites that are based on either academic excellence, financial need or social commitment.

Nelson Mandela University Vice-Chancellor Scholarship

The Vice-Chancellor recently introduced a premier scholarship to top achievers in the country. The scholarship, valued at R98 000 a year, is renewable annually for the first undergraduate degree or diploma, provided academic performance remains of the highest standard. Up to 25 Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships are granted each year. Applications close on the 31st of October 2017.

Investec Merit Award

Investec offers once-off partial bursaries of up to R20 000 to first year students who aim to study full time towards an undergraduate degree in BCom Accounting or BCom Accounting Sciences.

The amount of the merit award is determined by a committee comprising representatives from NMMU and Investec with reference to the academic performance and household income of successful applicants.

NOTE: The merit award is offered only for the first year of study. Thereafter recipients can apply for the Investec Bursary should they so choose.


  • South African citizens;
  • Admitted for the first time into the BCom Accounting or BCom Accounting Sciences programmes;
  • Outstanding Grade 12 results (i.e. APS score more than 40);
  • Mathematics mark of more than 65%; and
  • Financial need (aggregate household income below R340,000).

Tegkor/Nelson Mandela Univeristy Accounting Bursary 


Are you a Grade 12 learner who meets all of the following criteria? 
  • You are admitted for the first time into the BCom Accounting or BCom Accounting Sciences programmes at Nelson Mandela University in 2018.
  • You have excellent academic results in Grade 12

* An APS score of 45 and higher

* 80% and more for Mathematics

Are you a current BCom Accounting or BCom Accounting Sciences student?

If you meet all of the above requirements, you are eligible to apply for a bursary from the Tegkor / Nelson Mandela University Accounting Bursary fund.   


  • Learner must be a South African citizen;
  • Bursary amounts of up to R12 500;
  • Bursary will only be awarded for the first year of study, and will be credited to the recipients’ student account; 
  • This bursary can be used together with other bursaries and awards (e.g. Nelson Mandela University Scholar Merit Awards) - if declared on your application form.
  • Preference will be given to financial need as defined by the “missing middle” category of student intending on studying further but who does not already qualify for free access to higher education (aggregate household income above R350,000 but below R600,000 - proof to be submitted).

Nelson Mandela University Student who meets the following criteria:

· You are studying in 2018 towards the 2nd or 3rd year of the following programmes:

       *BCom Accounting (CA)

       *BCom General Accounting

       *BCom Accounting Sciences or BCom Rationum.

· You have above average academic results (i.e. average marks attained in 2017 which are greater than 70% for 1st year; or 65% for 2nd years)

· You have documented evidence (ie. in the form of testimonials) of making a significant contribution to society / others during 2017.

NOTE: The social commitment component will be evaluated based on evidence compiled and submitted by the applicant. A letter should be submitted that includes the following:

·  Description of the project(s)

· Period that you were involved in each project

· The difference that the project(s) made– i.e. feedback from the beneficiaries

· The number of people that benefited from the project(s).


Maximum amount of bursary: R7500 per student

Application open mid- December 2017

Closing date: 23 February 2018


Nelson Mandela University Student who meets the following criteria:

· You are studying in 2018 towards one of the following programmes:

       *PG Diploma in Accounting (CTA);

       *PG Diploma in Accountancy; or

       *PG Diploma in Internal Auditing.

· Your household income is below R350,000 per annum.

· You have achieved an average of 60% in your undergraduate programme.

· You do not qualify for any other bursary

Maximum amount of bursary: R7500 per student

Investec Bursary

Investec offers once-off partial bursaries to students who aim to study full time towards an undergraduate degree in Commerce, Business Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or a Commercial LLB. These degrees represent fields of relevance to the financial services and other key industries.

The main criteria for the selection of applications are financial need and academic potential. Applications are open to young South African citizens with academic potential who are in need of financial assistance. Students working towards or with a Matric Exemption with a minimum of 60% in English and Mathematics (not Maths Literacy) and a 50% pass rate in all other subjects. Students who wrote Matric (Grade 12) prior to 2008 should have a minimum of 60% in Maths (HG) and English (HG).

Sport Bursaries

The NMMU Sport Bureau offers sport bursaries of varying amounts to those who have demonstrated the ability to play sport at a high level of competition. Application forms are available from their office. Email: or phone 041 504 2496. 

Closing date: Before the end of October each year.


National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

NSFAS is a government loan scheme, with the added incentive of a maximum of 40% being converted into a non-repayable bursary depending on academic performance. The purpose of these loans is to assist financially-needy students who have the academic potential to succeed. As loans do not necessarily cover all costs, students are encouraged to seek additional funding from other sources. 

Only students whose GROSS combined family income (mother and father) does not exceed R140 000 per annum can apply. 

Application must be made on the prescribed application form BEFORE 30 October each year. Application forms are available from all financial aid offices from May each year. Incomplete application forms will not be considered.

A2A Kopano and Charteris and Barnes Accounting Bursary

This bursary is aimed at students that are studying towards a BCom Accounting CA qualification. Preference is given to students that will be in their second year of study the following year. 



Bursaries administrated by Nelson Mandela University

Bursaries are also available to full-time students using funds provided by private donors or trustees. Applications for financial assistance from funds administered by Nelson Mandela University must be made on a financial aid application form. Application forms can be obtained from the Financial Aid Office on North Campus.
